This time around when I tested the lens, in the center of the image, the Tamron 200-500mm lens shows lower contrast as well as lower MTF than the Canon lens. You need to remember that you are paying around USD $5000 for the Canon lens so do not expect too much from the Tamron lens. My initial options were the Sigma 50-500mm lens or the Tamron 200-500mm and I went with the Tamron strictly based on weight. They also show that the Tamron does sharpen up a little when stopped down and this applies at all focal lengths. I have been using this lens for a while with my Canon EOS 20D DSLR camera and I will take some time to write this Tamron 18-200 review. You should know that when a 200mm lens put on to a Canon EOS 20D or Rebel XT camera, the effective focal length will become 320mm. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend shooting any slower than 1/500 second to follow good rule of thumb practice. However, you can do so if you are using a tripod. When I mounted the lens firmly, I got great shots with no blurriness at all.
Also, you should keep in mind that you get what you pay for in the lens world. You get the convenience of a wide-angle, normal, and telephoto lens in one cheap piece. However, if you are shooting professionally, or need super sharp, perfect images, then you should carry additional three to four lenses that will compliment this lens nicely.
